NBMP Roost Hibernation results for Somerset
The group has been carrying out hibernation counts for many years, and the most recent results are below. The highest number of roosts counted in recent winters was 2018-19.
Winter Hibernation Survey 2022-23 results
A total of 15 hibernation roosts were counted in Somerset over the winter 2022-23, up from the 9 recorded last year, but down from the record of 26 in winter 2018-19.

- 1 brown long-eared hibernation roost counted (+1 on last year, same as 2018-19)
- No common pipistrelle bat hibernation roosts counted (same as last year and 2018-19)
- No Daubenton’s bat hibernation roosts counted (same as last year and 2018-19)
- 3 greater horseshoe hibernation roosts counted (-1 on last year, -3 on 2018-19)
- 7 lesser horseshoe hibernation roosts counted (+2 on last year, -4 on 2018-19)
- 3 Natterer’s hibernation roosts counted (+3 on last year, -1 on 2018-19)
- No serotine hibernation roosts counted (same as last year, -1 on 2018-19)
- No soprano pipistrelle hibernation roosts counted (same as last year, -1 on 2018-19)
- 1 whiskered/Brandt’s/alcathoe bat hibernation roost counted (+1 on last year, same as 2018-19)

The hibernation roost counts are down to one-third of the previous numbers of sites counted, and seem to be in a post Covid lull.
